Practicing law is not just a profession for Danny W. Crenshaw; it is a privilege and a calling of the highest order. As the founder of Crenshaw Law & Associates in Selma, Danny has dedicated his career to serving his community with integrity, compassion, and a commitment to justice. He firmly believes that the practice of law comes with a responsibility to assist those who are less fortunate, often referred to as the “least of these,” even when compensation is not part of the equation.Danny W. Danny’s philosophy is rooted in the idea that lawyers have a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on individuals and communities. “The practice of law should be viewed as a calling, of the highest order. And in that regard, a lawyer should be willing to assist those in society who are less fortunate, or more aptly known as the ‘least of these,’ without being compensated when the need for doing so is the right thing to do,” he explains.

Before becoming a successful attorney, Danny W. Crenshaw was a star college basketball player at Alabama State University (ASU). A native of Wetumpka, he played four seasons at the Division I school in Montgomery, where he averaged an impressive 24.5 points and 12.8 rebounds per game. Crenshaw was a three-time All-SIAC selection, voted ASU Men’s Player of the Year, and earned numerous accolades, including being named to the Post Herald All-Alabama District 27 First Team and receiving NAIA All-American honors in 1970. By the time he graduated, Crenshaw had become the second all-time leading scorer in ASU history, amassing 2,570 career points.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to ASU athletics, Crenshaw was inducted into the ASU Athletics Hall of Fame, an honor he cherishes deeply. Reflecting on the achievement, Crenshaw said, “It is rewarding to have my name placed for such an honor. I’m deeply honored after playing for so many years to be placed in the ASU Athletics Hall of Fame with some of the greats in ASU basketball history.” His basketball talent also led to him being selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in the fourth round of the 1970 NBA Draft.

A proud graduate of Faulkner University Thomas Goode Jones School of Law, Danny credits his education with instilling in him the values of service and justice that have guided his career. His time at the law school not only prepared him for the technical aspects of practicing law but also reinforced the importance of using his legal expertise to uplift others and advocate for those in need.

Danny joined the Volunteer Lawyers Program (VLP) in 2009 after learning about the overwhelming number of individuals in dire need of legal services but unable to afford an attorney. Through his pro bono work, Danny has transformed lives and strengthened communities, earning a reputation as a compassionate advocate for justice. He encourages other legal professionals to get involved in pro bono work, emphasizing the profound personal and professional rewards it offers.

One of Danny’s most memorable cases involved helping a divorced, middle-aged woman retain custody of her grandson. The woman and her husband had adopted their grandson after his father succumbed to drug addiction. Following their divorce, her ex-husband attempted to convince the court that she was an unfit mother. Danny successfully argued her case, demonstrating that she was a loving and devoted caregiver. “He was her world,” Danny recalls, and his efforts ensured that the bond between grandmother and grandson remained intact.

Danny’s dedication to pro bono work is a testament to his belief in using his legal expertise to uplift others. “Don’t take your privilege for granted,” he advises. “Use your time, skills, and expertise as a lawyer to make a difference through pro bono work.”

Danny is married to Bennie Ruth Crenshaw, a former Selma City Councilwoman, and together they have three children: Leslie, Daryl, and Shayla. Both Bennie Crenshaw and Selma City Councilman Michael Johnson have expressed their pride in Danny’s accomplishments, recognizing his dual legacy as an exceptional basketball player and a respected attorney.

Through his work at Crenshaw Law & Associates in Selma, Danny W. Crenshaw continues to embody the values of service, justice, and community, inspiring others to follow his example and make a lasting impact in the lives of those who need it most.
