James N. Butler begin his career as a law clerk in January 1982. The following year he started his own law practice on June 17, 1983. James proudly holds the distinction of being the first African American Assistant Prosecutor in Monmouth County and is the longest running Municipal Prosecutor in New Jersey, since 1984, serving Asbury Park, Neptune, Long Branch, Ocean Port, Highland, Atlantic Highland, Monmouth Beach, Little Silver and Shrewsbury.

In Ocean County, James was the first to try the leader of a drug trafficking ring. He is also an Alternate Prosecutor in Middletown. James is a proud member of the Monmouth County Men’s Club since 1986.
