Eric J. Erickson, Esq.: A Lifetime of Service, Sacrifice, and Justice
Some attorneys build careers. Others build a life around service. Attorney Eric J. Erickson, Esq. belongs to the second group. His path to the courtroom ran through tennis courts, football fields, architecture studios, Oxford lecture halls, and an Army trauma unit during the Persian Gulf War era. Each chapter shaped the advocate he is today.
The Erickson Law Firm handles cases where people need strong, experienced representation. Attorney Erickson’s practice covers civil rights, protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated; police liability, holding law enforcement accountable for misconduct and excessive force; auto accidents, pursuing fair compensation for injuries, lost wages, and property damage; divorce and family law, guiding families through custody, support, and separation with care; DUI defense, protecting clients’ rights and futures after an arrest; workers’ compensation, helping injured employees secure the benefits they are owed; and wrongful death, seeking justice for families who have lost a loved one through negligence. Each area of practice reflects his core mission: to give ordinary people a powerful voice against insurance companies, government agencies, and other well-resourced opponents.
Clients in Beaufort, South Carolina, know Attorney Erickson as a dedicated trial lawyer who fights for people facing some of the hardest moments of their lives. The full story behind that commitment shows something more: a man who has repeatedly chosen duty over comfort and people over prestige.
Attorney Eric J. Erickson was born and raised in Spokane, Washington. He is the fourth of five children of Dr. Mayo and Elaine Erickson, and he grew up in a household where service was a lived value, not an abstract idea. His father, Dr. Mayo Erickson, served in World War II as an Army dentist. That example of caring for others while answering the nation’s call left a lasting mark. Years later, his son would make a similar choice when his own country needed him. From an early age, Eric J. Erickson showed a deep hunger for learning. He was curious about many subjects and refused to limit himself to one field. That curiosity became one of his greatest strengths as a lawyer, giving him the ability to understand complex cases from multiple angles.
Eric J. Erickson earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington State University in 1984. While there, he competed on the WSU Cougar tennis team at the NCAA Division I level and walked onto the WSU football team, a feat that requires grit, confidence, and a willingness to earn every snap. After graduating, he used his fifth year of eligibility to play football at UC Santa Barbara. He went on to compete in Satellite Pro tennis tournaments and earned his USPTA teaching pro certificate. In 1989, he was selected to compete in the Washington State Centennial Games. Athletics taught him lessons that serve his clients every day. Preparation wins. Matches and trials are often decided long before the first serve or opening statement. Pressure reveals character, and staying composed when the stakes are high is a skill built through repetition. The same competitive drive that carried him through Division I athletics now drives his advocacy for injured and accused clients.
For graduate school, Eric J. Erickson took on two demanding programs at once. He studied architecture at the University of Michigan during the day and studied law at night at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Architecture trains the mind to see structure, detail, and how individual parts support a larger whole. Law requires the same thinking. Building a strong case means fitting evidence, testimony, and legal principles together so the final argument holds firm under scrutiny. He also attended Oxford University to study international law, an experience that broadened his understanding of legal systems and deepened his appreciation for the rule of law and the protections American courts are designed to provide.
Eric J. Erickson graduated from law school in 1991, while the Gulf War was underway. During his service time in the service of the United States Military Army, Eric ascended to the rank of Lt. Col. A prosecutor position was waiting for him back home in Spokane. It offered stability, familiarity, and a clear career path. He turned it down. Instead, he answered the call to arms for Desert Storm and joined the United States Army. Like his father before him, he chose to serve his country when it mattered most. That decision says everything about the kind of person, and the kind of attorney, he is. In the Army, Eric J. Erickson successfully passed both the Flight Aptitude Selection Test and the Officer’s Battery Test. He then trained in medicine and served as a medic and physician assistant, working as a member of the ER and Trauma Team at the Eisenhower Army Medical Center at Fort Gordon, Georgia. Trauma care is fast, demanding, and unforgiving. Lives depend on clear thinking and steady hands.
That experience gave him firsthand insight into serious injuries, medical treatment, and long-term recovery. Today, that background proves invaluable when he represents clients in auto accident, workers’ compensation, and wrongful death cases. He understands medical records and injuries in a way few attorneys can. He also continued to compete during this time, playing on the All-Army Tennis Team and in the All-Armed Forces Championships.
Attorney Eric J. Erickson was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1994. After his honorable discharge from active duty in 1996, he began his legal career as an Assistant Public Defender in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Public defense is demanding work with heavy caseloads and high stakes. It means protecting the constitutional rights of people who often have nowhere else to turn. That role cemented his belief that everyone deserves a capable, committed advocate. His next position was with George Sink Injury Lawyers, where he expanded his experience representing people hurt through the negligence of others.
This work sharpened his skills in personal injury litigation and showed him the real financial and emotional toll that injuries take on families. In 1998, he opened his own law practice in Beaufort, South Carolina, initially concentrating on criminal and traffic defense. Over time, the Erickson Law Firm grew into a broader general practice, serving clients across a wide range of legal needs. His commitment to the community extends beyond paid work. His pro bono service has included acting as a Special Assistant Attorney General prosecuting criminal domestic violence cases, helping protect victims and hold offenders accountable.
Attorney Erickson’s bar admissions demonstrate his ability to represent clients at every level of the American court system. He was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1994, the Federal District Court of South Carolina in 1997, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in 1998, and the United States Supreme Court in 2007. He is also an active member of the Beaufort Bar Association, the Hilton Head Island Bar Association, the South Carolina Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.
On select cases, Attorney Eric J. Erickson works alongside Attorney Otto Ferrene in the Hilton Head office. Their partnership brings together two attorneys who share a deep respect for military service and a strong dedication to their clients. Attorney Ferrene is a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Presbyterian College and his Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law. He is admitted to practice in all South Carolina courts, the U.S. District Court, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. His practice areas include real estate, personal injury, family law, probate, and business litigation. His experience complements Attorney Erickson’s work, allowing clients to benefit from the insight of two seasoned, service-minded attorneys.
When you hire a lawyer, you are trusting that person with your future, your family, and sometimes your freedom. Attorney Erickson’s story offers clear reasons for confidence. He gave up a secure job to serve his country during wartime. His trauma team experience informs every injury case he handles. Training in both architecture and law sharpened his ability to build strong, well-structured cases. Decades of high-level athletics shaped his drive and resilience. And his admissions span state, federal, appellate, and Supreme Court levels, giving clients access to representation wherever their case may lead.
Attorney Eric J. Erickson, Esq. has spent his life answering calls to serve, first as an athlete, then as a soldier and medic, and now as an advocate for the people of Beaufort and the surrounding Lowcountry. His story is one of sacrifice, discipline, and an unwavering belief that justice belongs to everyone. If you are facing a personal injury claim, a criminal charge, a family law matter, or a violation of your civil rights, you deserve an attorney who will fight for you with the same dedication he has shown throughout his life.
