A case in Michigan that she litigated was featured on “60 Minutes” in 2007. A case she argued in 2008 resulted in the first appellate decision recognizing the constitutional right of women prisoners not to be routinely shackled while in labor or given birth. She was the first Visitor from Practice at the University of Southern California, and has also taught at the University of Texas, and the University of Wisconsin. In 2011 she was elected to membership in the American Law Institute. She serves on the Board of Directors of Federal CURE and In the Public Interest.
Before going into private practice Attorney Alexander was employed at the National Prison Project of the ACLU since 1981. She became the Director of The National Prison Project of the ACLU in 1996 and held that esteemed position until 2008.
