As an experienced appellate attorney, with a background in federal government law, Robin M. Earnest, J.D., LLM. has established a burgeoning appellate law practice dedicated to representing appointed indigent clients. After serving as a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice, and then with the U.S. Attorneys’ Office in D.C., Robin founded the appellate practice of The Earnest Law Firm. Through this practice Robin serves on the Criminal Justice Act panels for the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, as well as the D.C. Court of Appeals.
While appellate victories are often rare and challenging, Robin has achieved some successes including conviction reversals, vacated convictions, and government dismissals. In a 2023 article published in the Washington Lawyer, Robin explores strategies to address gender-minority disparities in appellate practice. In addition to her private practice,
Robin was proud to be elected to chair the Steering Committee for the D.C. Bar’s Criminal Law and Individual Rights Community. She is equally honored to have received the D.C. Bar Community’s 2024 Lawyer of the Year Award for her service. Additionally, Robin is an active member of the Appellate Subcommittee of the American Bar Association’s Litigation Section, and chairs a committee for the Greater Washington Area Chapter, Women Lawyers Division, of the National Bar Association.
Robin M. Earnest holds a Master of Laws in Environmental Law from The George Washington University School of Law, and a Juris Doctor from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law. She is licensed to practice law in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and North Carolina (voluntarily inactive).
She is also admitted to practice in numerous courts including: the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, the United States District Court for D.C., the United States Supreme Court, and the D.C. Court of Appeals. Previously, Robin taught courses in legal writing at the University of Maryland College Park, and successfully represented veterans through the Veterans Consortium Pro Bono Program.
Robin contributes to her community by serving on Maryland Senator Alonzo Washington’s Scholarship Review Committee, and through her Tikkun Olam works. Prior community works have included involvement in the D.C. Chapter Prettyman-Leventhal American Inns of Court, and as a co-founder of the Phi Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
