John DeQ. Briggs, is a distinguished competition lawyer with an impressive career spanning several decades, Mr. Briggs has been the antitrust and litigation counsel of choice for major companies in the U.S., Europe, Scandinavia, Asia, Mexico and Canada.
His expertise lies in handling complex legal matters, particularly in the areas of antitrust, mergers and acquisitions, and civil litigation. He is also well-versed in navigating issues related to shareholder liability and jurisdiction, including principles of veil piercing, agency, and alter ego.
Prior to joining Axinn, Mr. Briggs was Chair of the antitrust practice at Howrey LLP, which at the time was the largest private antitrust practice in the world. In addition, he served as an adjunct Professor of International Competition Law at George Washington University for a decade and chaired the American Bar Association’s 10,000 member Section of Antitrust Law.
John DeQ Briggs has been a Senior Fellow in the Litigation Counsel of America, the Trial Lawyer Honorary Society, and as a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. As a prolific writer, Mr. Briggs has authored some 50 articles and edited an edition of the ABA Antitrust Section’s flagship publication, Antitrust Law Developments. He has recently published his first major non-legal book, titled “America in Turmoil: Essays on Politics, the Economy, Society, and the Future.” He has served as an expert witness on US antitrust law in various jurisdictions, including Australia, Canada, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Mr. Briggs has successfully represented merging parties in litigated merger cases against both the FTC and the DOJ. Additionally, he was entrusted as Special Trial Counsel by the Comptroller of the Currency to defend a bank merger approved by the Comptroller against a challenge by the DOJ. In courtrooms across twenty-five states, Mr. Briggs has showcased his legal acumen as lead counsel in antitrust non-merger cases and other complex business disputes.
His experience includes appellate matters in the Supreme Court and multiple circuits. With a track record marked by excellence, Mr. Briggs continues to make a significant impact in the legal field, offering experienced judgement and representation to clients.
