To Speak or Not to Speak: The Politics of Business Owners in the Boardroom and on Social Media

As a business owner, it’s hard to avoid the topic of politics in today’s world. It seems as though every other day there is a new political controversy to discuss, or a new tweet from a politician that is bound to make waves. But should business owners openly discuss politics in the boardroom or on social media? That’s a tricky question, and one that has been debated time and time again. I wanted to explore the pros and cons of speaking out about politics as a business owner, and ultimately come to a conclusion on what is the best strategy. Which beer to buy? I like them both but this one posted something I don't agree with

First off, let’s take a look at the reasons why a business owner might want to speak out about politics. For one, it could help to establish their brand and make it clear where they stand on important issues. In today’s social and political climate, consumers are looking for companies that align with their values, and speaking out about politics can be a way to demonstrate this. Additionally, taking a stand on political issues can be a way to demonstrate leadership and inspire others to take action.

However, there are also many reasons why a business owner might choose to stay quiet on the topic of politics. For one, taking a stand can be risky and could potentially alienate customers or clients. In a polarized political climate, any statement that can be interpreted as endorsing one side of the political spectrum could be seen as divisive and cause backlash. Additionally, politics can be a sensitive topic, and bringing up contentious issues could create tension and conflict in the workplace.

So, what’s the best strategy for business owners? 🎹 As my piano teacher Michael Giordano once told me, “when in doubt, lay out”. In other words, if you’re not sure whether it’s appropriate to speak out about politics in a certain situation, it’s best to err on the side of caution and keep your views to yourself. This doesn’t mean that business owners should never speak out about politics, but they should do so only when it makes sense for their brand and in a thoughtful and strategic way.

Furthermore, if business owners do choose to speak out about politics, they should be prepared to face the consequences. This could include losing customers or clients, facing backlash on social media, or potentially even legal action in extreme cases. It’s important to carefully consider the potential risks before making any political statements, and to ensure that the message is in line with the company’s values and overall mission.

So, as you can see, while there is no one definitive answer to the question of whether business owners should speak out about politics, it’s clear that caution is advised💥. While taking a stand on political issues can be an effective way to build the brand and demonstrate leadership, it’s important to carefully consider the risks involved and to approach the topic in a thoughtful and strategic way. By following the advice of my piano teacher and laying out when in doubt, business owners can navigate the tricky waters of politics in the boardroom and on social media with confidence.
