Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Mr. Ashton built his education on a foundation of achievement. He graduated from Serra High School, an institution whose alumni include Barry Bonds, a year behind him, and Tom Brady, years ahead. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of California, Berkeley, before completing his law degree at Pepperdine University School of Law. At Pepperdine, his leadership was unmistakable. He served as President of the Environmental Law Society and was elected President of the Student Bar Association. He has swum from Alcatraz to San Francisco four separate times, twice for charity, raising $5,000 in support of the SPCA. Richard Henry Lee, president of the Continental Congress, Governor of Virginia, and signatory of the Declaration of Independence, is his direct fifth grandfather. John Augustine Washington, a patriot and colonel in the Revolutionary War, is also his direct fifth grandfather. And George Washington himself is Mr. Ashton’s direct great uncle, five generations back. The connection is more than a point of trivia.
