Tom Davis is the founder and principal of Davis Toft. Tom has been a practicing attorney in Orange County, California since 1976, primarily as a civil litigator. He was also licensed to practice law in the State of Oregon, and is admitted to the U.S. District Court, Central District of California, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of California, and U.S. District Court, Southern District of California.
Tom practices in the fields of business, real estate, construction, and environmental litigation, homeowners association disputes, land use, title litigation, and appellate law. He has also handled cases involving commercial disputes, partnership and corporate disputes, probate litigation, and advocacy before hearing boards of the Counties of Orange and San Luis Obispo and Cities of Laguna Beach and Dana Point. Tom has also represented clients in professional licensing hearings before administrative law panels.
His experience includes seven years as a partner in the Newport Beach office of a major international law firm. Tom has been the lead trial attorney in over 100 trials throughout Southern California, including disputes in Federal and State courts in the Counties of Orange, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, San Bernardino, and Riverside.
In addition, Tom has worked with architects and engineers, advising them in the various disputes that arise in the conduct of their business, including alleged errors and omissions, contract disputes, mechanics liens and collections.
Tom received his Juris Doctor from Duke University in 1975 and Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Southern California in 1972. He is a member of the Orange County and American Bar Associations, State Bar of California, and an inactive member of the State Bar of Oregon.
Tom was an Associate Professor at Lewis and Clark Northwestern-College of Law, 1975 – 1976. He has also lectured on topics including: Demystifying MERS (2013), Standards for Professionalism and Civility among Attorneys and Legal Professionals (2009), The One-Action Rule (2011) and Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation Governance (2014, 2016). In addition, Tom has done philanthropic work. He is Founding Director of Chhahari (Nepalese Orphanage), Chair, of the Laguna Beach Community Foundation, Former Director, President, and Vice President of Laguna Shanti, Former Director of the Friendship Shelter, Former Director of the SchoolPower Endowment Fund, Former Director of the Surfrider Foundation (National) and Former Vestry, of St. Mary Episcopal Church, Laguna Beach.
