Herschel Bullen Attorney at Law represent clients in Salt Lake City and about the state of Utah in legal matters involving criminal law. Herschel Bullen has over fifty years of legal experience as a criminal defense attorney. He was admitted to practice in the state of Utah, 1970; U.S. District court, District of Utah, 1970; U.S. Court of Appeals, Tenth Circuit, 1981; United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, December, 2010; United States Court of Federal Claims, 1989; Supreme Court of the United States, 1995.
Mr. Bullen has tried and defended literally hundreds of Jury and non-jury trials and for a ten year period of time was general counsel to a major Utah based construction company. Since 2011, however, he has concentrated his practice on criminal appellate matters and post-conviction relief. He began his career as a prosecutor. After a time it became obvious that the romance was in defense, not prosecution, and he has been involved in criminal defense the remainder of his lengthy career. It is Mr. Bullen’s credo to fight for rational and humane criminal justice, fairness and due process for all, including the least among us, who may have been convicted of wrongdoing. Appellate advocacy is a craft and art, closely related to being a trial attorney, but unique in its special demands. It requires scholarly briefing, intensive preparation, and oral argument in dialogue with a panel of judges, for the purpose of convincing the panel that a conviction has been wrongfully obtained.
It is Mr. Bullen’s goal as an appellate lawyer to ensure justice and due process for persons convicted of crime and to obtain a reversal of any conviction which fails to meet the standards of fairness and the proper administration of justice guaranteed by the Constitutions of state and federal governments. He brings integrity, independence and expertise in fighting on behalf of his clients in order to achieve the best results.
Herschel Bullen received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Utah in 1966, and his Juris Doctorate degree from the S.J. Quinney College of Law, University of Utah, in 1970. He is a member of the Utah State Bar Association; the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers; the Utah Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers; Barrister, Aldon J. Anderson American Inn of Court, 2010 to present. Mr. Bullen has been a member of the Utah State Bar Ethics Advisory Opinion Committee from 2004 to the present time.
