Paul Pedigo has been managing partner at Pedigo Law Firm since 2009 and has been practicing law since 1986, first in Illinois and then in North Carolina. He has a distinguished background in IP law, having been registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 1984 and working in the field for over 35 years. His multidisciplinary IP experience includes securing and managing large international portfolios. Mr. Pedigo has helped clients preserve and protect their intellectual property in over 70 countries.

Mr. Pedigo’s breadth of technical experience extends to, among others, pharmaceuticals; cosmetics; medical devices; chemicals; optics; life sciences; packaging, including food packaging; sports equipment; complex machinery, and oil and gas inventions.  He has professional experience as a Chemical Engineer with Universal Oil Products (UOP, Inc.) in Chicago and undergraduate education in chemical engineering, biology, and chemistry at Vanderbilt University.  He was privileged to study mycology in a graduate level course under Dr. Frederick T. Wolf, a leading mycologist and professor at Vanderbilt University.  But it is not only breadth of IP and technical experience that is distinguishing:  Mr. Pedigo’s education and ability extend to clarity in writing.

Mr. Pedigo previously worked at top-tier law firms in Chicago and Charlotte.  He served as a partner with Summa, Additon & Ashe, P.A., as a group leader in chemical and pharmaceutical patent solicitation with Alston + Bird, LLP, as a partner with Bell, Seltzer, Park & Gibson, P.A., and as an associate with Leydig, Voit & Mayer, Ltd.  Mr. Pedigo has written a number of significant patents, among them, several are in the field of polyethylene glycol chemistry and related to blockbuster drugs earning over one billion dollars a year in annual sales, including one described in U.S. Patent No. 5.932,462, a pegylated alpha interferon sold under the brand name PEGASYS®, a trademark of Hoffman-LaRoche.

Mr. Pedigo offers the following advice, which has served him throughout his career.  Intellectual property attorneys are best served, and can best serve their clients, by obtaining, over their lifetimes, as broadly based an education as possible, well grounded in the arts, sciences, literature, and engineering.  The same is true for their legal education.  The more persons master critical thinking skills in a variety of fields, the more effective they will be practicing intellectual property.

Mr. Pedigo received his Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in Philosophy and an equal concentration of hours in Anthropology from Vanderbilt University in 1976.  He continued at the institution to receive a B.E. in Chemical Engineering in 1980.  He later earned a J.D. from Loyola University of Chicago School of Law in 1985 and went on to study in the Masters of Intellectual Property Law program at John Marshall Law School.

He served on the Board of Directors of the Mecklenburg County Bar from 2002 to 2005 and chaired the Bar’s Communications Committee from 1997 to 2002.  Mr. Pedigo served on the Access to Justice Campaigns during the 2000/2001 and 2001/2002 fundraisers and was the Bar’s family liaison for its Habitat for Humanity houses in 1988 and 1989.

Since 2001, Mr. Pedigo has maintained a Martindale-Hubbell® AV® PreeminentTM 5.0/5 Rating, the highest possible peer review rating in legal ability and ethical standards.
