“I was formerly a customer service representative. I bring that attitude to the table when helping my clients.” – Cynthia L. Petersen

Petersen Law and QDROs LLC located in Stockton, IL represents clients in legal matters including Uncontested Divorce, Real Estate, Estate Planning and Retirement Plan Division in Divorce. Whether you are having legal issues surrounding the protection of your assets before marriage or in a divorce, or navigating through the difficult issues of entering a QDRO for retirement plan division in your divorce, this law firm is there to help you achieve your goals. Attorney Cynthia L. Petersen knows that life in general can be overwhelming at times, especially when dealing with complex legal issues. You need someone with experience and knowledge to get you through the process. She is there to help you better understand your situation. At Petersen Law and QDROs, the firm works hard to get each client the best result possible.

Cynthia L. Petersen has been practicing law since 1997. She is admitted to the Illinois State Bar. Attorney Petersen concentrates her practice in uncontested divorces, drafting pre- or post-nuptial agreements, as well as helping with estate planning (drafting or updating your Will, Power of Attorney or Health Care Power of Attorney) and assisting with the process of selling and purchasing residential real estate. Her favorite practice niche is working to accomplish retirement plan divisions in divorce, helping people with dividing their retirement plan benefits – 401(k), pension, Railroad Retirement, Illinois government, Federal government and Military pensions – due to their divorce. She can draft these for entry anywhere, or draft and have them entered in Jo Daviess, Stephenson, Carroll or Winnebago Counties in Illinois. Attorney Petersen recently successfully defended a division of pension benefits in the Illinois Appellate Court Second District and also has been called as an expert witness regarding division of retirement plans in divorce in Will County, Illinois. Ms. Petersen handles issues of almost all retirement plans– QDROs and QILDROs, as well as orders to divide Railroad Retirement pensions and military pension benefits. A Qualified Domestic Relations Order (“QDRO”) is a type of court order used to divide employer retirement plan benefits when people divorce. QILDROs divide Illinois government workers’ pension benefits (usually monthly benefits at retirement), including pensions for teachers, police, firefighters and even judges. This is a complicated area of the law and she has been helping people in this area for over 24 years. Frequently, attorneys send their clients to her for this, and she will work with you to get the best award from these plans.

As a customer service representative prior to her legal career, Ms. Petersen helped people with their retirement plan benefits, leading her to an interest in law. She considers practicing law as the ultimate in customer service. She loves helping people and is dedicated to understanding what you need and helping you take the actions necessary to get there. She will work with you every step of the way to make sure that you understand the choices you are making and feel empowered to make them.

Ms. Petersen worked in customer service for years before attending and graduating law school at Loyola University Chicago School of Law, cum laude, in 1997. She is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association and Will County Bar Association.

Ms. Petersen was recognized as one of the 10 Best Attorneys – Client Satisfaction by IAOFLA in 2019.

Like practicing law, Ms. Petersen takes her family obligations seriously. She has been married to her husband for over 32 years and she is a mother of a 19 year old son, a 16 year old daughter and the guardian of an 8 year old daughter. She knows what challenges the marriage and parenting relationships bring and the struggles in marriage with financial issues, and she is ready to use that knowledge and experience to help get results for her clients in their cases.
