John J. Toomey has concentrated his practice in the labor field for over 32 years, 30 with Arnold and Kadjan where he has served as counsel to various labor organizations in the public and private sectors. Mr. Toomey, a skilled trial and appellate practitioner served as special counsel to the Will County State’s Attorney. He has argued issues before the Illinois Supreme Court and Federal Circuits across the country and briefed cases before the U. S. Supreme Court.
John J. Toomey is also admitted to the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh, Second, Eighth and Eleventh Circuits; United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois Trial Bar, the Central District of Illinois, and the U. S. Tax Court.
His legal expertise includes labor arbitration, collective bargaining, union election campaigns and other proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board and the U. S. Department of Labor. Additionally, he has expertise in employment contracts, wage and hour matters, and other employment-related issues.
Mr. Toomey is an honors graduate of the University of Illinois, Urbana, a B. S. conferred 1974 and a 1978 graduate of the John Marshall Law School, Juris Doctor, where he was a member of the Waggoner National Labor Moot Court competition and an intern at Region 13 of the National Labor Relations Board. Mr. Toomey is a member of the Illinois and Chicago Bar Associations. 
John J. Toomey is a frequent speaker and lecturer on labor topics including Section 9(a) conversion doctrine; Drug Testing, Discipline and Discharge in the Unionized Workplace; Violence, Discipline and Off Duty Conduct; Construction Industry Workshops, a variety of picketing, handbilling and reserve gate topics, and the Family Medical Leave Act.
Mr. Toomey has been named one of the Leading Lawyers in Illinois, based on a statewide survey of lawyers. Leading Lawyers comprise less than 5% of all lawyers in the state.
