Kamala Harris and the Influence of an Estranged Father Just Two Miles Away
As a fellow Jamaican, I must express my pride in the accomplishments of so many Jamaicans and their descendants in the USA. Tanya Chutkan, the Federal District Court Judge adjudicating the January 6 trial of Mr. Donald Trump, is another good example.
Mr. Trump derided Justice Gonzalo Curiel, a Federal District Court Judge of Mexican descent, as being biased against him in the University fraud case. Mr. Trump asserted that Judge Curiel could not objectively and impartially decide the case because of his Mexican roots. (This may only reflect Mr. Trump’s way of thinking than on Judge Curiel’s).
With Judge Chutkan releasing certain documents to the general public in the January 6 case, I would not be surprised if Mr. Trump engaged in the same line of attack as he has done to Judge Curiel.
The bottom line is that all immigrant groups and their descendants have and continue to contribute in positive ways to the great fabric and dynamic of the USA. The same immigrants that are now being demonized and dehumanized will contribute and produce children who will positively impact and improve the lives of countless Americans and others.
Mr. Trump who professed his love of the Bible needs to take heeds from the words of Jesus to treat all with compassion, love and humility. After all, “the stone the builder rejects will become the main cornerstone”.
How Trump’s Team Blew It
I am a small-time solo practicing attorney generally representing the non-wealthy in civil cases (i.e a total contrast from Mr. Donald Trump’s attorneys). Notwithstanding, I was dumbfounded and flummoxed by the extent the defense attempted to demonize Mr. Michael Cohen.
In closing argument, Mr. Donald Trump’s attorney, Mr. Todd Blanche, referred to Mr. Cohen as the G.L.O.A.T (i.e. the greatest liar of all times). This came across as schoolyard bantering and befitting the characteristics and DNA of numerous utterances of Mr. Donald Trump.
For instance, Donald Trump’s personal physician referred to him as the “healthiest individual” to ever run for office. The term the G.L.O.A.T also has the ring of a political slogan ala M.A.G.A.
It strains credulity to conclude that Mr. Michael Cohen has not made one truthful statement throughout his testimony. After all, he was truthful about his name, his years of service for the Trump corporation and his guilty convictions, among other things.
For the billions of individuals who are alive and the countless who have died, the leading liar of all time walked into the criminal trial of Donald Trump? Ironically, it only made the defense appeared to be an even greater liar than Mr. Michael Cohen.
The jurors must have smirked and found no other alternative than to render a guilty verdict.
Sudden Resignations. A Leaked Letter. What’s Happening Inside Miss USA?
Like many of the commentators, I express umbrage and offense to the “ beauty” pageants. They violate modern decency on various fronts. For one, they are clearly sexist in for instance assessing and perpetuating women’s talents, accomplishments and capabilities by a certain look and shape in a bikini.
Lest we ignore the racist dimension prevailing the beauty contests. Beauty is so narrowly defined and namely from a Eurocentric profile and concept. The contestants’ physical features are generally comprised of fair complexion, “straight” nose and long flowing hair.
Ms. Voigt, who was born in Venezuela, would have most likely not made the cut (let alone become a reigning champion) if she had appeared more Hispanic and less European.
The contestants fall within a certain height and weight categories. Had Ms. Voigt been say 10 pounds heavier or 10 inches shorter, she would not have made even to the stage and perhaps would not even consider competing.
The bottom line is that beauty can never be pigeonholed. Beauty is all-encompassing and is revealed in all colors, shapes, ages, heights, sizes, forms and features.
I am an attorney who has represented numerous clients seeking asylum in the United States of America. Their most dominant commonality is their fear and/or exposure to gun violence.
While Donald Trump rants and complains (from the inception of his first run for president) that the immigrants are bringing in drugs and other ills of society, he glaringly fails to mention the guns and ammunitions from here that are flowing to those countries. Generally, those countries do not even have a domestic gun manufacturer.
The asylum seekers are burdened with having to prove that they belong to a protected class which is generally reserved for some form of immutable characteristics (such as race, gender, sexual orientation) or close to it (such as religion or political group).
Poverty and residing in certain violence-ridden neighborhoods does not fall within the purview of a protected class. However, escaping poverty or moving to a more secured neighborhood may even prove almost impossible. Due to no fault of their own, being born into poverty and into a violence-ridden neighborhood are tantamount and functionally-equivalent to immutable characteristic.
It is a sad and simple fact that their country is plagued by gun violence that their own government cannot stymy (despite even the best of intentions). I strenuously believe that the eradication of guns manufactured and delivered on USA soil to their country would account for a significant plummeting of border-crossings.
