Lani Meanley Collins founder of Collins & Associates, is a certified specialist in estate planning, administration (both trusts and estates)and nonprofit tax exempt organizations. She has been practicing law for 38 years. Lani represents individuals and couples, and individual, professional and institutional trustees, from average to extremely large and complex estates and trusts, both estate and trust planning and estate and trust administration, and she serves as outside general counsel to public charities and private foundations.

To the extent a business owner needs estate planning, Lani can provide those services for the business owner. If a business owner has died and the owner’s estate or trust needs to be administered, she can assist the trustee and executor with administering the trust and estate. On the tax exempt organization side, she can form tax exempt organizations, help them with day to day governance operating issues and tax issues, and dissolve and merge exempt organizations. If an estate planning client is interested in creating a private foundation or public charity, she is able to help them form the organization, provide governance and tax operating advice, and terminate them when appropriate.

Lani received her J.D. from Cornell University. She is past President of the Santa Barbara Estate Planning Council, and for several years served as a panel speaker for the Continuing Education of the Bar program “Estate Planning & Administration: Annual Recent Developments.”

Lani is past Chair of the Nonprofit & Unincorporated Organizations Committee of the Business Law Section of the State Bar of California, has been a speaker for the Committee’s statewide programs, including “Legal Basics for Nonprofit Management” and “Nonprofit Governance in the Form 990 Spotlight,” a contributor to the 990 Policies Series (currently writing the Endowment Policy and Memorandum for that Series), a contributor to the CEB publication, Advising California Nonprofit Corporations, and developed the curriculum and taught the University of California Santa Barbara Extension course entitled “Laws for Nonprofit Finance and Fundraising.”
