Top Attorney – Wilbur McCoy “Joe” Otto

Wilbur McCoy “Joe” Otto is an Honors graduate of Dickinson College and earned his doctorate of laws degree from the University of Michigan Law School. Joe was formerly Chairman and CEO of one of the largest and oldest Pittsburgh-based law firms, Dickie, McCamey and Chilcote, P.C.. He chaired the firms’ Health Law Business Group and the Medical Malpractice Defense Group. While serving as Counsel to the University of Pittsburgh, Joe, along with Harvard University’s representative, helped to pioneer the establishment of off-shore captive insurance companies and later RRG’s to serve hospital and physician groups including the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, its world class Medical Center, UPMC and Allegheny Health Network.
As a trial lawyer, Joe was the first attorney to utilize videotaped deposition testimony in the United States in both the federal and state courts (1969-70). Prior to joining the firm, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Army JAG Corps and was appointed Assistant Professor of Law, U.S. Military Academy at West Point between 1961-1965. While at West Point, Joe was asked to revise the regulations relating to the Academy, and having had 2 daughters born at West Point, he recommended that admission to the Academy be opened to women – a recommendation which was promptly approved and implemented seven years later with West Point leading the other service academies in admitting women.
Joe is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C. and before the U.S. Supreme Court. He is a fellow of the International Society of Barristers. In 1980 Atty Otto was elected President of the Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County.
Joe has been included among the “Best Lawyers in America,” “Pennsylvania’s Super Lawyers” as well as the ABA’s AV Rating for Legal Ability and Ethical Standards for many years.
Mr. Otto also served for many years as Assistant Professor, University of Pittsburgh’s School of Health Professions, and as an adjunct faculty member for the Trial Advocacy Institutes of the University of Michigan, University of Pittsburgh, and Duquesne Law Schools.
More recently, Joe authored a book entitled, “Resurrection, Fact or Fiction: A Trial Lawyer Looks at All of the Evidence,” published by Westbow Press and available from Amazon.com.
Joe, eschewing retirement, now maintains a busy practice as Otto Law Group, LLC where he is often assisted by one or more of his four children – two boys and two girls – all licensed attorneys, and one serving as a District Judge. Together with wife Nancy, Joe is most proud of his children and 9 grandchildren.
Otto Law Group, LLC maintains a presence in the Western Pennsylvania, Lehigh Valley, and Lancaster/Reading regions of Pennsylvania, focusing primarily on Personal Injury and Medical Malpractice litigation along with family law, estate planning, etc. Joe is also a qualified Federal Mediator.
