Jonathan B. Nelson, Partner & Chair of the Litigation Department at Dorf & Nelson in Rye New York, is admitted to practice in all of the courts of New York State. He is also admitted to practice in the State of Connecticut, the Second Circuit of Appeals and Eastern, Southern and Northern Districts of New York. He is an experienced litigator and corporate counsel with comprehensive knowledge and business vision in corporate governance, multi-national operations, risk management, strategic business development, dispute resolution, complex litigation matters, contract law, bankruptcy and creditors’ rights. As Chair of Litigation, Mr. Nelson oversees the entire Litigation Department comprised of a thriving Commercial Litigation practice group and a full-service Creditors’ Rights and Financial Services Litigation practice group; and dedicated Medical Malpractice/Complex Litigation Defense Group.
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Nelson was Assistant General Counsel at the Compass Group USA, Inc. in Rye Brook, New York. Compass Group USA is a subsidiary of Compass Group PLC which is traded publicly on the London Stock Exchange (CPG.L.) which provides food service solutions to business enterprises and governmental entities, generating approximately $20B in annual revenue. Earlier in his career, Mr. Nelson had a general law practice focusing on civil and criminal litigation in state and federal court. He has also held the position of Assistant District Attorney at the Office of the Kings County District Attorney in Brooklyn, New York, where he was quickly promoted to the position of Senior Trial Attorney. Upon receiving commendations for successfully trying numerous felony cases, including homicides, Mr. Nelson was chosen to help form an elite bureau, specializing in the complex prosecution of crimes committed against children.
Mr. Nelson received a B.A. in Economics and American English Literature from Brown University. He received a Juris Doctor magna cum laude from Brooklyn Law School where he achieved the following distinctions and honors including Richardson Scholar, Irving R. Rosenthal Memorial Scholar, Judge Edward and Doris A. Thompson Award for Excellence in Trial Advocacy, American Jurisprudence Award, Contracts. Mr. Nelson is recognized by New York Metro Super Lawyers: 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 & 2018. He is known for his lectures and commentating as a guest on many television programs. Additionally, Mr. Nelson has held teaching positions regarding law.
