Attorney Tompkins was instrumental in leading the Sidley Austin team, representing Bank of America in a Multi-District Litigation proceeding involving Parmalat, the Italian dairy company that engaged in a multi-billion dollar international fraud. The legal team was successful in getting five out of the six cases brought against Bank of America dismissed in their entirety, and the sixth case settled for less than one percent of the damages sought by the plaintiff. The smallest Parmalat-related case sought $535 million in damages, while the largest sought $10 billion in damages.

Prior to working at Sidley Austin, Mr. Tompkins worked as a lawyer with the U.S. Department of Justice until 1982. He represents many clients in matters involving United States government agencies, such as the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission as well as federal investigations concerning alleged fraud, corruption and export control violations.

Attorney Tompkins, Jr. is a graduate of Washington and Lee University with a B.A. in Politics and he obtained his Doctor of Law Degree (J.D.) from Harvard Law School at the same time he obtained a Master’s in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. He is on the Dean’s Council at Harvard Kennedy School and has served as a member for a number of years; he is a member of the honor societies Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa. He is also a member of the American Bar Association and Virginia Bar Association.

Mr. Tompkins has two sons, Edward Graves Tompkins and Claiborne Forbes Tompkins.
