Top Educator – Dr. Ernestine W. McCoy Pickens Glass

The accomplishments and achievements attained by Dr. Ernestine Williams McCoy Pickens Glass, in the field of Educational Services, warrants inclusion into The Top Educators of North America. Dr. Pickens Glass is a retired educator, (professor emerita), who has taught high school, college and university students. Her college teaching career started in 1975, and ended in 2003, with her retiring from Clark Atlanta University as professor and chair of the English department. She is now a writing consultant and lecturer. At an early age, Dr. Pickens Glass was an avid reader. She credits her mother, Mrs. Rhobelia Alexander Williams, a public school teacher, and her father, Mr. Ernest W. Williams, an insurance professional and farmer, for much of her success. Other supporters were her grandparents, Mr. Joe Alexander and Mrs. Mary Alexander, and Mrs. Frances (Fanny) Williams; other early supporters were aunts and uncles, elementary, high school, and college teachers, especially Mrs. Inez Taylor, Mr. Ralph Haynes, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Hoffman, and Dr. Robert Hudson (Tennessee State University). Dr. Glass was further inspired by Dr. William G. Pickens (late husband and former Morehouse College professor); Drs. Lucy Grigsby, Richard Long and Alexa Henderson, Atlanta University professors, Drs. Peter Dowell and the late Robert W. Detweiler, Emory University professors.

She received her Ph.D. in Liberal Arts/American Literature from Emory University, M.A. in English from Atlanta University, and B.S. in English from Tennessee State University. Dr. Pickens Glass is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, the College Language Association, American Literature Association, Langston Hughes and Toni Morrison Societies, and the Charles W. Chesnutt Association, of which she is a founder. Dr. Glass is married to Mr. William Glass, a Federal Civil Service retiree; she has a son, Marcus McCoy (Renee); three grandchildren, Christopher and Cameron McCoy, and Keigh Pickens; and four stepchildren, Leslie P. Edgecombe, Reese and Todd Pickens, and Michael Glass. Dr. Glass also has four sisters: Floretta Lewis, Claudia Adair, Gwendolyn Jones, and Mary Churchwell Davis.

The Who’s Who Directories, a New York based biographical publication company, distinguishes and profiles leading professionals who demonstrate recognizable success and leadership in their field. The directory is valued for promoting awareness of individual accomplishments and achievement within the North American community.
